EXCLUSIVE: Twin Brothers accused of mistreating horses share their side of the story
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The twin brothers accused of mistreating horses in Uptown are opening up about what happened. They say they were riding Saturday April 4th and admit to making some mistakes, but say they were not responsible for the horse getting hit.
Desmon and Deven Moore have several horses at Reform Stables. Desmon came up with the idea to start his business while he was locked up.
“Ever since I came home, I bought my first horse and one horse turned to two, then two turned to 13 and 13 turned to 22. So this is this is my life,” Desmon Moore said.
The twins were riding horses in Uptown Charlotte April 4th when another man stood on a horse and fell off. That horse ran into traffic and was hit by a car. Desmon says that was not his horse.
“I was chasing behind the horse with my horse,” Desmon said. “When I seen the car coming, I pulled my horse to the corner. I pulled my horse to the side and I watched the horse get hit. Then I grabbed it once it got up.”
Shortly after the crash, a video shows the twins interacting with police. They were both arrested and charged with misdemeanors. Deven admits there is a video circulating that shows him fall off his horse riding too fast that night. It is not the same horse that was hit by the car.
“I’m not gonna lie, there’s definitely a lot of things that, you know, we could use help on and we’re still learning as we’re going,” Deven Moore said. “But in this short amount of time, we came a long way.”
The twins showed WCCB the barn where their horses live. They say the incident in Uptown has caused rumors about the health of their horses.
“I take care of these horses every day. I’m here every day. Literally. Like you think I live here. I’m here so much. This is what I do. This is my life,” Desmon said.
The twins say Reform Stables is a place for second chances where people come to learn to ride and interact with horses. The twins say they plan to keep riding in uptown, but maybe some changes should be made.
“As far as some things that should be put in place as far as like our community and all of our cowboys, cowgirls that ride [Uptown] maybe, you know, let’s not run them on the pavement, you know?,” Desmon said.
Charlotte City Councilmembers say they are taking a closer look at the city ordinances about animals in Uptown and will make changes if necessary to improve public safety.
The horse that was hit by the car got up and walked after the crash.
