SC passes new measure requiring students to use bathrooms that match the gender on their birth certificate
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Students in South Carolina public schools are now required to use bathrooms and locker rooms corresponding with the gender on their birth certificate.
State lawmakers in Columbia just passed the measure that applies to all public schools and universities across South Carolina.
Supporters say it protects the privacy of female students and keeps men out of women’s spaces. Opponents, like the American Civil Liberties Union, say the new law discriminates against transgender and non-binary students.
