CHARLOTTE, NC — Body cameras could show up on Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Deputies as early as this Fall.
Sheriff Irwin Carmichael says he is hoping to outfit 100 deputies with body cameras, starting with road deputies, the ones serving warrants.
“If you look at what’s happening across the nation, it’s a tool to look at and keep our  community safe and keep our officers safe,” said Sheriff Carmichael.
He says the public would be able to view the video if a deputy is accused of excessive force once the court process is completed. The Sheriff says his office has been testing a model for a year on detention officers, but he wouldn’t reveal the possible price tag for taxpayers at this point.
“It depends on which one we select,” said Sheriff Carmichael. “But also, it’s, again, about the getting the funding, and are we able to secure a grant with this.”
The Sheriff’s Office is already looking at cuts for the fiscal year that begins in July, and County Commissioners will have to approve purchasing the cameras.
“Yeah, I think this would be pretty high on my priority list,” said Commissioner Matthew Ridenhour. “I think the body cameras can be an effective tool, and I think it’s a way that citizens can also feel more comfortable with policing  activity.”
Commissioner Ridenhour says the county does have limited dollars and competing interests.
The Sheriff says the video is worth the price.
The Sheriff is working to choose a camera style. He says he will then gather grants and present the proposal to the County Manager.
Commissioners say they will see a final budget proposal by May 28.
