NBA-CLIPPERS

Rivers will quit if Sterling remains owner

LOS ANGELES (AP) β€” Los Angeles Clippers interim CEO Richard Parsons says coach Doc Rivers has told him he’ll quit if Donald Sterling remains owner of the team. Parsons made the statement while testifying in a trial to determine whether Sterling’s wife Shelly Sterling can sell the team for $2 billion to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

The NBA has sought to force out Sterling since soon after racist statements emerged on recordings in April.

Rivers, who is black, has said he had heard from other Clippers business employees that they didn’t think they would be able to work for Sterling under the circumstances.

Sterling has denied he is a racist from the witness stand and vows he’ll never sell the team, claiming he is the victim of illegally recorded conversations that invaded his privacy.

NBA-CAVALIERS

Report: Cavs close to signing top pick

CLEVELAND (AP) β€” It’s not clear as to how long Andrew Wiggins will be a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers but a person familiar with the negotiations says the Cavs will sign the No. 1 overall pick in the near future. Wiggins has been linked to a possible trade with Minnesota for All-Star forward Kevin Love. The person familiar with the talks says Wiggins will sign with Cleveland as early as Wednesday.

If the Cavs and Wiggins work out a deal, a trade for Love would not be able to be consummated for 30 days.

The Cavs and Timberwolves have had ongoing discussions about a trade for Love since before the draft. The Timberwolves have always insisted that Wiggins be involved in any package, a stipulation the Cavaliers have resisted.

CHICAGO (AP) β€” The Chicago Bulls say they have signed first round draft pick Doug McDermott who was last season’s college player of the year.

Terms of the deal involving the 6-foot-8 forward from Creighton weren’t released.

As a Creighton senior last season, McDermott averaged a nation-leading 26.7 points, becoming one of eight players in NCAA history to score more than 3,000 career points.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) β€” The Golden State Warriors and swingman Brandon Rush have completed the deal they agreed to last week. The contract is for two years and about $2.5 million.

The deal must still be approved next week by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, who have previously announced its support.

The Coliseum has hosted the A’s since 1968 but the facility has recently had sewage and lighting problems.

NFL-CONCUSSION LAWSUIT

Concussion settlement questioned

PHILADELPHIA (AP) β€” Seven former professional football players are challenging a tentative class action settlement of NFL concussion claims. Their appeal echoes their previous complaints that some players won’t be fairly compensated under the settlement, which would cover nearly 20,000 retired players for 65 years.

Senior U.S. District Judge Anita Brody has granted preliminary approval pending a November fairness hearing. Her approval came after the NFL agreed to remove the $765 million cap to ensure the fund doesn’t run out.

The group appealing the judge’s decision includes 2008 Pro Bowl player Sean Morey, now Princeton University’s sprint football coach.
