CONCORD, Mass. (AP) β€” Walden Pond, the serene spot where writer Henry David Thoreau withdrew to live the simple life, is going solar.

Officials are breaking ground on a new visitor’s center at Walden Pond State Reservation, and it will feature two decidedly high-tech touches: a solar canopy and a pair of electric vehicle charging stations.

Gov. Deval Patrick says it’s fitting that the $8 million new center in Concord, Massachusetts, will be powered by green technology.

Patrick called Walden Pond the birthplace of America’s conservation movement, and he says the improvements will help future generations enjoy the park.

The pond was the inspiration for Thoreau’s “Walden.”
