WOKING, England (AP) β McLaren has announced the return of Fernando Alonso and says the two-time Formula One champion will drive alongside Jenson Button in the 2015 season, with Kevin Magnussen dropping to reserve driver for the British team.
Alonso’s departure from Ferrari after five seasons and return to his former team, where he drove in 2007, was widely expected.
It was a straight choice between Button and Magnussen to be McLaren’s other driver, with the Briton retained after outscoring Magnussen 126-55 in the 2014 season.
Button, who won the driver’s title in 2009 with Brawn, heads into his sixth year with McLaren and 16th year in F1 β making him the most experienced driver on the grid.
The 22-year-old Magnussen is dropped after one season and will be the test and reserve driver.
