Lester, Gomes, Cespedes debut with new clubs

UNDATED (AP) β€” Jon Lester was a winner in his Oakland Athletics debut, while Yoenis Cespedes (yoh-EH’-nehs SEHS’-peh-dehs) suffered a loss in his first game with Boston.

Lester allowed three runs and nine hits over 6 2/3 innings as the A’s hammered Kansas City 8-3. The left-hander entered the seventh inning with an 8-1 lead before losing his effectiveness, two days after he and Jonny Gomes (gohmz) were acquired from Boston for Cespedes.

Gomes had two hits and two RBIs during Oakland’s eight-run fifth inning. He capped the rally with a two-run single that actually scored a third run on outfielder Alex Gordon’s error.

Cespedes made his Red Sox debut and went 1-for-4 with a run scored in a 6-4 loss to the New York Yankees. The Yankees trailed 3-0 until Derek Jeter sparked a four-run third with a two-run double before scoring the go-ahead run on Carlos Beltran’s single. Mark Teixeira (the-SHEHR’-uh) added a solo homer and Stephen Drew delivered an RBI double, his first hit in two games since joining the Yankees from Boston.

Elsewhere in the majors:

β€” Jacob deGrom carried a one-hit shutout into the eighth inning and the New York Mets scored four times in the seventh to beat San Francisco 4-2. The Mets rallied after Jake Peavy tossed six perfect innings in his Giants debut. DeGrom has won his last five starts, compiling a 1.04 ERA with 37 strikeouts over 34 2/3 innings.

β€” Kolton Wong and Jhonny Peralta (JAH’-nee peh-RAHL’-tah) hit solo homers as St. Louis topped Milwaukee 9-7 to pull within two games of the NL Central-leading Brewers. Wong had three hits and three RBIs to back winning pitcher Justin Masterson, who surrendered five runs over six innings of his first start since the Cardinals acquired him from Cleveland on Thursday.

β€” Brent Morel had two hits and three RBIs while Pittsburgh was scoring seven times over its final two at-bats to beat Arizona 8-3. Vance Worley helped the Pirates pull within 1 Β½ games of the NL Central lead by allowing just one run in six innings.

β€” Anthony Rendon (rehn-DOHN’) hit a three-run homer and had four RBIs to lead Washington’s 11-0 crushing of Philadelphia. Jordan Zimmermann struck out eight and scattered five hits in seven innings to get his seventh win.

β€” Atlanta suffered its fifth straight loss as San Diego beat the Braves 3-2 on Will Venable’s RBI single in the bottom of the 12th. The outcome gives the NL East-leading Nationals a 2 Β½-game lead over the Braves.

β€” Evan Longoria hit a two-run homer and Ben Zobrist (ZOH’-brihst) got four hits as Tampa Bay hammered the Angels 10-3, putting the Angels two games behind Oakland for the AL West lead. Logan Forsythe and Brandon Guyer drove in two-runs apiece for the Rays.

β€” Homers by Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez powered Detroit past Colorado 11-5, giving the Tigers a five-game lead over the second-place Royals in the Al Central. Rick Porcello tied for the major league lead with 13 wins by limiting the Rockies to two runs and five hits while fanning 10 in eight innings.

β€” Houston clobbered Toronto 8-2 as Jon Singleton went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBIs. Chris Carter and Jason Castro each had three hits and two RBIs to back Brett Oberholtzer, who gave up two runs and six hits in seven innings.

β€” Baltimore still leads the AL East by 2 Β½ games over the Blue Jays after Robinson Cano (kah-NOH’) hit a three-run homer and Dustin Ackley added a solo homer in Seattle’s 6-3 win over the Orioles. Ackley scored three times and Kendrys (KEHN’-drehs) Morales drove in two runs to help the Mariners get within two games of the Jays for the final AL wild-card berth.

β€” Miami pulled out a 2-1 triumph against Cincinnati on Christian Yelich’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th. Nathan Eovaldi (eh-VAHL’-dee) had to settle for a no-decision after yielding a run and just two hits in seven innings.

β€” T.J. House combined with four relievers on a five-hitter in Cleveland’s 2-0 shutout of Texas. House allowed three hits while striking out seven in five-plus innings.

β€” Trevor Plouffe was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI doubles as Minnesota outscored the Chicago White Sox 8-6. Oswaldo Arcia put the Twins ahead to stay with a two-run double in the eighth, one inning before Danny Santana capped the scoring with a solo homer.

D-backs All-Star sidelined

PHOENIX (AP) β€” Arizona All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has a fractured left hand and is headed to the disabled list.

Goldschmidt was hurt when he was hit by a pitch from Ernesto Frieri in the ninth inning of Friday night’s loss to Pittsburgh. There is no word on how long he is expected to be sidelined.

Goldschmidt is among the top-3 in the National League in doubles, extra-base hits, runs, total bases, RBIs and walks.

BASKETBALL-US EXHIBITION-GEORGE INJURY

George recovering from surgery

LAS VEGAS (AP) β€” Indiana All-Star Paul George is facing a lengthy recovery after undergoing successful surgery to repair an open tibia-fibula fracture in his right leg. The 6-foot-9 forward suffered the gruesome right leg injury late in the U.S. national team’s intrasquad scrimmage Friday night.

Pacers president of basketball operations Larry Bird has issued an updated statement saying it’s too early to start talking about George’s expected return.

Doctors estimate a full recovery could take up to 18 months.

George is expected to remain in the hospital for about three days, according to a statement from USA Basketball. Doctors say he’s resting comfortably.

FOOTBALL-HALL OF FAME

Seven join Hall of Fame

CANTON, Ohio (AP) β€” The Pro Football Hall of Fame welcomed seven new members during induction ceremonies on Saturday.

The honorees include former Tampa Bay linebacker Derek Brooks, ex-Giants pass-rushing great Michael Strahan (STRAY’-han) and former Bills pass-catching star Andre Reed. Joining them were offensive tackle Walter Jones, defensive back Aeneas (uh-NEE’-uhs) Williams, punter Ray Guy and defensive end Claude Humphrey.

Humphrey called the 28-year wait to hear his name called as being worth it. Guy made history by becoming the first full-time punter to be inducted.

One of the night’s biggest ovations was reserved for previous Hall inductee Jim Kelly, who is recuperating from chemotherapy and radiation treatments for sinus cancer. Reed closed his induction speech by catching a pass from Kelly, something he did 663 times when the two were Bills.

GOLF-BRIDGESTONE INVITATIONAL

Sergio holds onto lead

AKRON, Ohio (AP) β€” Sergio Garcia posted a 3-under 67 and leads the Bridgestone Invitational by three shots after three rounds. He ended his streak of 37 holes without a bogey on the 14th hole. Garcia and other had to wait out a delay due to storms before finishing up.

Rory McIlroy gained some ground on the leader by finishing his 66 with consecutive birdies that put the British Open champ alone in second place. First round-leader Marc Leishman shot a 68 and trail by five shots.

Tiger Woods shot 72 and is 15 shots behind, while Phil Mickelson finished with a 69 and is 17 back.

Bubba Watson shot a 73 and is out of contention but did unleash a 424-yard drive on the 659-yard, 16th hole. It’s the longest drive of the year on the PGA Tour.

GOLF-3M CHAMPIONSHIP

Dawson holds lead

BLAINE, Minn. (AP) β€” Kenny Perry is the leader through 36 holes of the three-round 3M Championship in Minnesota.

Perry is 16-under following a 9-under 63. He’s one shot ahead of Marco Dawson, who followed Friday’s 63 with a 66.

Gary Hallberg, Gene Sauers, Bernhard Langer and Jeff Maggert share third at minus-13.

GOLF-BARRACUDA CHAMPIONSHIP

Ogilvy climbs leaderboard

RENO, Nev. (AP) β€” Geoff Ogilvy birdied the final hole to take a three-stroke lead in the third round of the Barracuda Championship in Reno. Ogilvy had seven birdies and two bogeys in a 12-point round to push his total to 35 under the modified Stableford system.

Nick Watney is tied for second with Jason Allred.

INDYCAR-HONDA INDY 200

Bourdais takes pole

LEXINGTON, Ohio (AP) β€” Sebastien Bourdais has captured the pole for Sunday’s running of the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio.

Points-leader Helio Castroneves (EHL’-ee-oh kas-troh-NEHV’-us) starts 15th in the open wheel race. He enters the race with a 13 point-lead over teammate Will Power, who qualified sixth.

NHL-SIGNINGS

Habs come to terms with Subban

UNDATED (AP) β€” The Canadiens have agreed to terms with top defenseman P.K. Subban (soo-BAN’) on an eight-year deal. The agreement comes just a day after an arbitration hearing that would have led to a one-year contract.

Subban will be under contract through the age of 33. He is the 2013 Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s top defenseman. General manager Marc Bergevin (BUR’-zheh-vihn) says the agreement helps consolidate the future of the team.

In other NHL moves;

β€” Anaheim has signed Patrick Maroon to a three-year contract extension through 2018. The physical left wing recorded 29 points in 62 games during his first full NHL season.

β€” The Lightning have signed goaltender Ben Bishop to a two-year contract extension through 2016-17. Bishop was a Vezina Trophy finalist last season after going 37-14-7 with a 2.23 goals-against-average in 63 games.

OBIT-VAN WIEREN

Former Braves broadcaster dies

ATLANTA (AP) β€” The Braves say longtime broadcaster Pete Van Wieren (WEER’-uhn) has died after a battle with cancer. He was 69.

Van Wieren was affectionately known as “The Professor” for his encyclopedic knowledge of the game and long hours of research. He was part of a landmark team that ushered in the “SuperStation” era on TBS along with Ernie Johnson and Skip Caray.

Van Wieren spent 33 years with the Braves before retiring.
