Wintry, Slippery Sunday Ahead
Ice accumulation is a big concern in the Piedmont for the second half of the weekend, as numerous power outages are expected.
After forecast hype all week, it’s time to get down to business. A powerful winter storm sits just a few hundred miles west of the Carolinas, which will bring impactful snow, sleet, and freezing rain to the WCCB Charlotte viewing area. Most of us should stay dry through midnight, outside of a few flurries, as clouds build in from the southwest. The main body of moisture will slide into the viewing area by 2-3 AM for many. By 5 AM, the entire region will see some sort of precipitation. Expect steady snow, sleet, and freezing rain throughout the day before tapering off southwest-to-northeast by sunset Sunday.
Most areas north of the border will see snow to start, which could be heavy at times. By sunrise, however, the forecast starts to get messy. A transition line to sleet and freezing rain will make its way northward throughout the day, stopping right around the I-40 corridor. While the mountains should see 90%+ snow, the forecast won’t be so clean for everyone else. Communities south of I-40 should prepare for numerous power outages, as anywhere between a quarter- and a half-inch of freezing rain will come down. Wind gusts could approach 30-40 mph across the board, further worsening power outages.
