Confirmed Case Of Red Measles In Mecklenburg County

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —  Health officials say someone has been diagnosed with a case of red measles in Mecklenburg County.

An unvaccinated individual was diagnosed with red measles (Rubeola) last week.  The patient had traveled to a country with endemic red measles.

Officials say as a precaution, everyone who came in contact with the patient has been contacted.  Preventative measures are being taken at this time and there is no immediate risk to the general public.

Red measles is a contagious respiratory disease that is caused by a virus.  It is spread through the air through coughing and sneezing, according to a news release from the Mecklenburg County Public Information Department.

Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and sore throat followed by a rash that spreads all over the body.

Measles can be prevented with the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine.
