Harbaugh to Michigan…Bumgarner top AP Male Athlete…Ohio State loses on home court

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) β€” As expected the University of Michigan has named former San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh as its new coach. Harbaugh played his college ball at Michigan and his father served as an assistant coach with the team when Harbaugh was a youngster.

UNDATED (AP) β€” Madison Bumgarner of the Giants has been named The AP’s Male Athlete of the Year. The 25-year old was brilliant in the post-season, winning the MVP award in both the World Series and the National League Championship Series. In the Fall Classic Bumgarner won twice and earned the save in the deciding seventh game.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) β€” Ohio State, the 20th-ranked team in The Associated Press Top-25 men’s basketball poll, was knocked off today on its home court by Iowa, 71-65. Jarrod Uthoff and Aaron White led the attack for the Hawkeyes with 18 and 17 points respectively. Iowa is now 10-4 overall while the Buckeyes dropped to 11-3.

PORTLAND (AP) β€” In a good matchup in the NBA tonight two division leaders are meeting in Portland. The Blazers start the night on top of the Northwest Division with 25 wins and 7 defeats while visiting Toronto leads the Atlantic Division with a mark of 24-7.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) β€” The Anaheim Ducks have assigned veteran Dany Heatley to their American Hockey League affiliate in Norfolk. The move came after Heatley cleared waivers. Heatley hasn’t clicked with the NHL-leading Ducks, who signed him to a one-year, $1 million deal in the offseason. He is scoreless in six games while laboring on the ice and struggling with injuries.
