PANTHERS-OFFENSE

Panthers QB Newton, RBs Williams, Stewart to play

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) β€” Coach Ron Rivera says help is on the way for the Carolina Panthers’ offense.

Rivera says he expects quarterback Cam Newton and running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart to play in the team’s second preseason game Aug. 17 against Kansas City. All three practiced Sunday after missing Carolina’s preseason opener against Buffalo.

That should help an offense that managed just 75 total yards in the first half of Carolina’s 20-18 loss to the Bills.

Newton has been practicing since the start of training camp, but Sunday marked the first time the team allowed him to run to the zone read and carry the football.

Stewart practiced for the first time after missing the first two weeks with a strained hamstring.

Williams sat out the first game to rest.

NASCAR-WATKINS GLEN

Allmendinger wins at Watkins Glen

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) β€” AJ Allmendinger beat Marcos Ambrose on a two-lap dash to the finish to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International on a somber Sunday.

Three-time Cup champion Tony Stewart pulled out of the race 12 hours after he struck and killed sprint car driver Kevin Ward Jr., who had climbed from his car during a dirt-track race in nearby Canandaigua, New York.

In Allmendinger’s first TV interview after winning, he offered his condolences to the Ward family, saying “we’re a community here, we’re thinking about you.”

The victory made his one-car team for JTG Daugherty Racing eligible for the Chase for the Sprint Cup title. Allmendinger held off Ambrose through the first two turns and opened a lead after both cars bumped and won going away.

US UNDER-18

US under-18 women win FIBA Americas title

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) β€” A’ja Wilson led the U.S. under-18 women to the FIBA Americas title, scoring 25 points in 21 minutes in a 104-74 victory over Canada on Saturday night.

Wilson, from Hopkins, South Carolina, was 9 of 13 from the field and had 11 rebounds. Napheesa Collier of O’Fallon, Missouri, added 18 points.

Shaylisha Colley led Canada with 16 points.

Also, Argentina beat Brazil 69-67 in the third-place game, Puerto topped Chile 51-49 for fifth, and Mexico beat El Salvador 77-45 to finish seventh.

The top four teams qualified for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship in Russia.

NC STATE-MEDIA DAY

Underwood ready to make big plays for Wolfpack

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) β€” Bryan Underwood spent the summer getting stronger, improving his conditioning and even flirting with his goal of squatting 500 pounds in the weight room. He is hoping it will help him make some game-turning plays for North Carolina State, too.

The fifth-year senior receiver is coming off a broken collarbone that sidelined him for the final month of last season.

Underwood says he has gotten faster and stronger, and is “able to push my limits” more than he ever has before. Receivers coach Frisman Jackson says there is a “night and day” difference from where Underwood was in spring practices and how he is practicing now in preseason camp.

USTA BOYS’ 18S

Noah Rubin wins USTA Boys’ 18s

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) β€” Noah Rubin won the USTA Boys’ 18s National Championship on Sunday to earn a main draw wild card into the U.S. Open, beating Collin Altamirano 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

The 18-year-old Rubin, from Rockville Centre, New York, also earned a wild card into the U.S. Open doubles main draw Saturday when he teamed with 16-year-old Stefan Kozlov of Pembroke Pines, Florida, to win the Boys’ 18s title.

Rubin won the Wimbledon boys’ singles title in July. He’s set to play at Wake Forest this year.

Altamirano, the 2013 18s winner, is from Sacramento, California. He will play at Virginia.
