CATAWBA COUNTY, NC – Charges are piling up against the man accused of killing a beloved school guidance counselor in Newton.
A grand jury in Catawba County indicted Sharman Odom on first-degree murder, first-degree sexual assault and first-degree kidnapping charges.
“If I had to put one word on him it would be “monster”. I hope he gets everything he deserves; I hope he gets punished as heavily as possible too,” said Nick Doty, a former student of Maggie Daniels.
“Anger is the first thing you feel. How could someone stoop to that level? How would anyone even think along those lines?” said Dr. David Stegall, superintendent of Newton-Cover City Schools.
Stegall says he cannot explain evil to students, but the district will offer counseling to students and honor Daniels.
A friend found Daniels dead in her apartment on June 28. Police arrested Odom more than a month later. He was living in the complex with his mother.
Stegall says there are already plans in place to honor Daniels. He says Maggie’s favorite saying, “The best is yet to be” will be painted over the door at Discovery High School where she was a counselor. There are also plans to build a memorial at the school and give away two scholarships in her name.
“Those who do evil things like this, there will be repercussions. So we look for that to play itself out, and we have complete faith in our legal system,” said Stegall.
Odom is being held in the Catawba County jail without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 6.
