ROCK HILL, S.C. — A 50-year-old woman has been charged after a Rock Hill investigation led to the seizure of several dogs Wednesday morning.

The Rock Hill Police Department responded to a Jefferson Avenue home around 10:41 a.m. to assist York County Animal Control with an investigation. Upon arrival, officers found several dogs living in ‘deplorable’ conditions, authorities say.

According to Rock Hill police, one dog was in fatal condition and needed urgent medical care. The dog later passed away while receiving veterinary care.

Police say there was no food for any of the animals, water was either nonexistent or unclean for drinking, some of the dogs were malnourished, and all the animals were living in feces.

Shavonya Pride, the resident at the home, stated the the dogs belonged to her son who does not live there, according to a news release. Pride informed authorities that she last fed the dogs on March 7, but she was not responsible for feeding them. In addition, she said the dogs have been on her property for the last 3 months, according to police.

During the investigation, five dogs and one puppy were seized from the home.

According to police, Pride was arrested and charged with 3 counts of ill treatment of animals.
