Remember when cicadas were all the talk? Or murder hornets? This year it is all about the Giant Joro spider.
Arachnophobia is the fear of spiders which is one of the most common fears in the United States. You won’t want to hear this, but the large, scary looking Joro spider is expected to invade the East Coast this spring. The first Joros to arrive in the United States from East Asia were likely stowaways on shipping containers in 2013. Since then they have spread across the state of Georgia and the southeast.
These very large yellow, blue-black and red spiders can grow up to 3 inches long. Need a comparison? Think of a crayon or the width of your palm. These spiders are venomous, but are harmless. Like Daddy-Longlegs they cannot harm humans because their fangs are not big enough to puncture human skin.
“Researchers said Joros can use their silk to carry them along with the wind in what they called “ballooning,” allowing them to parachute into new locations. It’s part of the reason why Joros were able to spread so rapidly across the state of Georgia.” – Leigh Beeson from The University of Georgia.
