Officials say the fire was brought under control by 10:30 a.m., but not before over 11,000 Duke Energy customers lost power.
Service has since been restored.
Officials say the fire was contained within the mobile structure and did not reach the main substation.
No personnel were on-site and there were no injuries, according to a news release.
Duke Energy is investigating the cause of the fire.
Crews from the Charlotte Fire Department also responded with Hazmat Response Unit and Foam Unit due to the mineral oil burning within the transformer.
Officials say East John Street between Interstate 485 and Stallings Road was closed Friday morning but has since been reopened.
