The first two known Ebola patients to be treated for the deadly virus on U.S. soil make a full recovery. Charlotte missionary Nancy Writebol walked out of Emory University Hospital on her own Tuesday. Her colleague, Dr. Kent Brantly, followed in her footsteps Thursday. He says it’s a miracle.
More than 1,300 people in west Africa have died in the Ebola outbreak since March. But tonight, there’s new hope for a cure. Writebol and Brantly contracted the virus while treating patients in Liberia, but no longer have any traces of it. Doctors aren’t sure what part, if any, experimental treatments played in the recoveries. They do confirm that Brantly and Writebol are not contagious, but are actually immune to certain strains of the virus. Both say they’re open to returning to west Africa to finish the work they started.
