Cavs win No. 19 and Coach K gets No. 1,000
UNDATED (AP) β The second-ranked Virginia Cavaliers kept their perfect season intact, while Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski (shuh-SHEHF’-skee) picked up a milestone victory.
The Cavs improved to 19-0 by pulling out a 50-47 triumph over Virginia Tech. Virginia trailed by as many as 10 before Justin Anderson scored eight of his 12 points during a late 12-0 run.
The Hokies appeared poised to upset their state rivals after a 30-9 run gave them a 43-33 lead.
Krzyzewski also needed a comeback to become the first coach in Division I men’s basketball history with 1,000 victories. Tyus Jones scored 22 points and the fifth-ranked Blue Devils went on an 18-2 run down the stretch to beat St. John’s 77-68 in New York. Jahlil Okafor (jah-LIHL’ OH’-kah-fohr) had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Duke, which trailed by 10 with 8 1/2 minutes remaining.
In other top-25 finals:
β Fourth-ranked Villanova crushed Creighton 71-50 behind Darrun Hillard’s season-high 24 points. Ryan Arcidiacono (ahr-kee-dee-ah-KOH’-noh) added 10 points for the 18-2 Wildcats, who rebounded from Monday’s 20-point loss to Georgetown.
β Jerian Grant scored 25 points and blocked a last-second shot that helped eighth-ranked Notre Dame oustlast North Carolina State 81-78 in overtime. Pat Connaughton and V.J. Beachem added 11 points apiece and helped the Fighting Irish rally from an 18-point, first-half deficit.
β Terry Rozier scored 26 points and No. 10 Louisville bounced back from a loss to Duke by downing Pittsburgh 80-68. Montrezl Harrell added 18 points and seven rebounds for the 16-3 Cardinals.
β Dakarai Tucker scored a career-high 19 points and Brandon Taylor provided 14 as 12th-rated Utah hammered Washington 77-56. Tucker and Taylor combined to hit eight 3-pointers in the Utes’ 15th straight home win.
β Maryland barely avoided an upset loss as Dez Wells tipped in the game-winning basket with 1.4 seconds left to give the 13th-ranked Terrapins a 68-67 decision over Northwestern. Melo Trimble had 27 points for the Terps, who trailed by 11 before outscoring the Wildcats 18-6 over the final four minutes.
β Ron Baker scored 15 points and No. 14 Wichita State breezed past Drake 74-40 for its 26th straight win in the Missouri Valley Conference. The game was so lopsided that nobody played more than 28 minutes for the 18-3 Shockers.
β No. 20 Northern Iowa pulled out a 54-53 win at Illinois State on a 3-pointer by Nate Buss with five seconds left. Seth Tuttle provided most of the Panthers’ offense with 21 points.
βD’Angelo Russell scored 22 points and added 10 assists as Ohio State defeated No. 23 Indiana 82-70 . The Buckeyes turned 15 turnovers into 26 points in their most impressive Big 10 victory.
β Butler hammered No. 24 Seton Hall 77-57 as Andrew Chrabascz scored 15 of his 16 points in the first half. Kellen Dunham delivered 15 points and Roosevelt Jones had 12 and seven rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Warriors, Hawks win again…Six straight for Cavs
UNDATED (AP) β The Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks continue to shred through the NBA’s regular-season schedule. The Hawks extended their team-record winning streak to 16 games, and the Warriors claimed their 19th consecutive home win.
The Warriors improved their league-leading record to 36-6 as Stephen (STEH’-fehn) Curry had 22 points and 11 assists in a 114-111 triumph over Boston. Klay Thompson had 31 points and Andrew Bogut (BOH’-guht) added 13 points and 13 rebounds to help Golden State improve to 14-0 versus the Eastern Conference.
Atlanta still leads the East by seven games over Washington after a 112-100 victory over Minnesota. Paul Millsap scored 20 points and Al Horford added 19 as the Eastern Conference leaders won for the 30th time in 32 games.
Elsewhere in the NBA:
β LeBron James scored 34 points, including the first eight in the fourth quarter of the Cavaliers’ sixth consecutive win, 108-98 against Oklahoma City. Kevin Love finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds, and Kyrie Irving added 21 as Cleveland improved to 6-1 since James returned from an eight-game absence.
β Jonas Valanciunas (YOH’-nuhs val-ehn-CHOO’-nuhs) had 20 points and 11 rebounds in Toronto’s third victory in four games, 114-110 over Detroit. DeMar De Rozan delivered 25 points and Amir Johnson had 18 to help the Raptors halt a two-game home skid.
β John Wall scored six of his 19 points in overtime and had 16 assists as the Wizards downed the Nuggets 117-115 in Denver. Kris Humphries had a season-high 21 points and 14 rebounds to help Washington stop a two-game skid.
β NBA scoring leader James Harden had 37 points and eight rebounds as Houston dealt the Los Angeles Lakers their eighth straight loss, 99-87. Harden hit four 3-pointers and added five assists in the Rockets’ third victory in four games.
β Blake Griffin and Chris Paul scored 23 points apiece in the Los Angeles Clippers’ 120-100 romp over Phoenix. J.J. Redick had 20 points for the Clippers, who led by just two before their 15-0 run in the fourth quarter.
β Tim Duncan and Kawhi (kah-WY’) Leonard each had double-doubles as San Antonio knocked off Milwaukee 101-95. Duncan contributed 20 points and 11 rebounds, Leonard added 19 points and 14 rebounds.
β Dwyane (dwayn) Wade scored 26 points and Chris Bosh chipped in 20 as Miami downed Chicago 96-84. Hassan Whiteside had a triple-double with 14 points, 13 rebounds and a team-record 12 blocks for the Heat.
β Anthony Davis capped his 28-point, 10-rebound performance by draining the go-ahead free throws in the final seconds of the Pelicans’ 109-106 victory over Dallas at New Orleans. Tyreke (ty-REEK’) Evans scored 24 points, including a clutch running hook in the final half-minute.
β Indiana’s seven-game losing streak is over after the Pacers outscored the Magic 31-17 in the fourth quarter of a 106-99 triumph in Orlando. David West finished with 20 points, and Damjan Rudez (dahm-YOHN’ ROO’-dehz) scored 16 of his career-high 18 points in the final period.

Jennings to miss rest of season
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) β Pistons guard Brandon Jennings will miss the rest of the season after rupturing his left Achilles tendon in the third quarter of Saturday night’s 101-86 loss at Milwaukee.
Jennings had an MRI that confirmed the injury, which will require surgery.
The 25-year-old Jennings averaged 15.4 points and 6.6 assists in 41 games this season.
NFL-SUPER BOWL
Seahawks DBs feeling good
PHOENIX (AP) β Seahawks All-Pro safety Earl Thomas pronounced his separated left shoulder “pretty good” when the team arrived Sunday for the Super Bowl.
Thomas was injured in Seattle’s overtime victory against Green Bay in last week’s NFC championship game. He says there is no way he won’t be on the field to face New England in the Super Bowl.
Fellow Seahawks All-Pro defensive back Richard Sherman has an elbow injury that he also dismissed as a non-factor for next Sunday.
NFL-PRO BOWL
Team Irvin wins Pro Bowl
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) β Jimmy Graham, Matthew Stafford and J.J. Watt were the stars in Sunday’s Pro Bowl, which was won by Team Irvin 32-28 over Team Carter.
Graham grabbed two touchdown passes, including a 1-yard scoring grab from Matt Ryan on fourth down with 3:10 remaining. Stafford was the offensive game MVP after throwing for 316 yards and two TDs. Watt came away with defensive MVP honors by intercepting a pass and recovering a fumble.
Greg Olsen and Emmanuel Sanders also caught a pair of touchdown passes apiece.
The goal posts were narrowed to from 18.6 feet to 14 feet on all kicks, not just PATs as had been previously announced. The PATs also were moved back to make it a 33-yard kick. Adam Vinatieri (vin-ah-TEHR’-ee) missed two extra points and a 38-yard field goal. The 42-year-old Colts kicker hasn’t missed an extra point in real games in five years.

Source says Gordon fails drug test
CLEVELAND (AP) β A person familiar with the situation says troubled Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has failed another drug test and could be banned by the NFL for one year.
ESPN first reported Gordon’s failed test, citing anonymous sources.
Gordon has twice been suspended for substance-abuse violations.
The Browns released a statement saying they were disappointed to learn of reports on Gordon. The team said it has not been notified by the league of a failed test.
NHL-ALL STAR GAME
Tavares nets four in wild All-Star spectacle
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) β A record 29 goals were scored in the NHL All-Star game at Columbus, and John Tavares contributed four of them.
The New York Islanders center tied the league All-Star record for goals while helping Team Toews (tayvz) beat Team Foligno (foh-LEE’-noh) 17-12. Tavares was one of seven players on Team Toews with at least four points, along with NHL scoring leader Jake Voracek (VOHR’-ah-chehk). Jonathan Toews and Patrice Bergeon (pah-TREES’ BEHR’-zhur-ahn) each finished with a goal and four assists, while Voracek had three goals and five points.
But the game MVP was local favorite Ryan Johansen of the Blue Jackets. He scored twice and had an assist, including a goal that gave Team Foligno its only lead late in the first period.
Fans voted for the MVP via Twitter.
All-Star game leading vote-getter Zemgus Girgensons (ZEHM’-guhs GEER’-gehn-suhn) was one of three players who failed to score at least one point.

Serena reaches quarters…Cibulkova ousts former champ
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) β Serena Williams has moved into the Australian Open quarterfinals by downing the woman who beat her in the second round of last year’s French Open.
Williams had 17 aces and 41 winners in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Garbine Muguruza. The top-seeded Williams settled down after committing two double faults and 14 unforced errors in the opening set.
Venus Williams’ strong run continued when she beat sixth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the first time since 2010.
Dominika Cibulkova (doh-mihn-ih-kuh see-bul-KOH’-vah) moved into the quarters with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over two-time champion Victoria Azarenka. The 10th-ranked Cibulkova pounded 44 winners and broke former No. 1-ranked Azarenka’s serve seven times.
Over to the men’s side, where fourth seed Stan Wawrinka (vah-VRIHN’-kah) has reached the quarterfinals by winning a pair of tiebreaks. Wawrinka was a 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 winner against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Spurred on by hundreds of flag-waving Japanese supporters at Rod Laver Arena, U.S. Open finalist and No. 5-ranked Kei Nishikori had little trouble in a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 9 David Ferrer.
Big-serving No. 8 seed Milos Raonic advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-3 win Monday over No. 12 Feliciano Lopez of Spain.

Vonn wins again
ST. MORITZ, Switzerland (AP) β Lindsey Vonn mastered a tricky super-G race for a record-extending 64th World Cup victory. The American raced down the Swiss course in 1 minute, 23.55 seconds with only one rival able to finish within a second of her. Vonn became the all-time wins leader in women’s Alpine skiing last weekend.

Haas takes tourney
LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) β Bill Haas was the winner of the Humana Challenge, finishing one stroke ahead of five others.
Haas closed with a 5-under 67 for a 22-under total that gave him his first PGA title since the 2014 AT&T National. He pulled ahead with a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-4 16th and parred the final two holes.
Matt Kuchar (KOO’-chur), Charley Hoffman, Brendan Steele, Steve Wheatcroft and Sung Joon Park tied for second.
GOLF-CHAMPIONS TOUR
Jimenez 2-for-3 on Champions Tour
KAUPULEHU-KONA, Hawaii (AP) β Miguel Angel Jimenez birdied six of the final nine holes to win the Champions Tour’s season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship.
The Spaniard closed with a 6-under 66 for his second victory in three career starts on the 50-and-over tour. Jimenez finished at 17-under 199 at Hualalai Golf Club for a one-stroke triumph over Mark O’Meara.

Hall of Famer died of heart attack
CHICAGO (AP) β An attorney representing the family of Chicago Cubs great Ernie Banks says the Hall of Famer died after suffering a heart attack. Mark Bogen spoke alongside Banks’ widow, Liz. He said Banks suffered a heart attack on Friday, the same day he died.
Banks spent his entire 19-year career with the Cubs. He hit 512 home runs and was twice named the National League’s Most Valuable Player.
FIGURE SKATING-US CHAMPIONSHIPS
Brown takes men’s title
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) β Jason Brown has won his first U.S. figure skating title, holding off Adam Rippon after his big lead after the short program.
Brown finished with 274.98 points to beat Rippon by 2.5. Rippon won the free skate with 187.77.
Third-place finisher Joshua Farris had a chance to overtake Brown, but one of his triple-jump combinations didn’t count because he did a double toe loop three different times.
