Man Charged After A Fatal Crash That Killed Two In Monroe

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Jose Herrera, 52, was arrested and charged in the wreck that killed two people on Highway 74 last week.

Herrera was charged with two counts of second degree murder, reckless driving, driving while impaired and other motor vehicle charges.

Herrera was taken into custody Tuesday night. He is being held at the Union County Jail under $200,000 bond.Β 

The accident happened just after 9 p.m. near Bob Mayberry Hyundai on U.S. Highway 74. Authorities say Jose Herrera was traveling west on Highway 74 and crossed over into the east bound lane. Herrera hit a vehicle head on causing the vehicle to collide with a tractor trailer.

Police have confirmed that the deceased victim is a 70-year-old woman from Marshville. The woman’s husband was transported to a local hospital.Β
