CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers have waived cornerback Brandon Boykin just two months after signing him to a one year contract.
The Panthers signed Boykin to a $840,000 contract, that included an $80,000 signing bonus, to compete for the nickel cornerback position.
Following the loss of Josh Norman, Carolina had an obvious need at cornerback. Boykin was not thought of as a replacement for Norman, but his minimal contract and NFL experience seemed to add depth to a depleted position group.
However, Carolina drafted cornerbacks James Bradberry, Daryl Worley and Zack Sanchez in the draft last month, and their strong showing at rookie minicamp made Boykin expendable.
The Panthers expect to have Ben Benwikere available to start the season following surgery to repair a broken leg he suffered near the end of last season. Benwikere and Robert McClain are the only cornerbacks on the roster who played for Carolina in 2015.
Carolina also signed cornerback Shaq Richardson on Monday following his tryout at rookie minicamp. Richardson was originally drafted in 2014 by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
