THC-Laced Snacks Seized Around the State; Is Charlotte at Risk for Halloween?

CHARLOTTE – THC infused snacks were seized from vape and tobacco store shelves in Eastern North Carolina.

The packaging is meant to look like regular candy, chips, and other sweets.

A lot of times, the labels feature a cartoon character or other images which can be attractive to children.

WCCB’s Emma Mondo spoke with the North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall about this discovery, and why it could pose a threat with trick or treating.

“THC is not for kids,” said Marshall.  “There have been cases where children have gotten into this and just a small amount with a smaller child can be a very serious medically inducing problem or death. There was a four year old in Virginia that consumed a whole pack of what his mother bought legally, and it looked very familiar so the child ate the entire pack, the child died, and the mother has been charged with a type of man slaughter.”

According to America’s poison centers, cannabis edible poisonings in kids 12 and under has increases 700 percent since 2018.

We asked the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department about this situation here in our area.

“As far as any particular cases or anything specific to what you just asked, I cant say that we have seen anything here specifically like that in Charlotte,” said CMPD Officer Johnathan Frisk.

While there seems to be no direct threat of this in our area, parents are still reminded to remain cautious, especially on Halloween.

“When the kids do get the candy, to make sure you’re not actually eating the candy until you get home and its a little more well lit and can be a little more inspected,” said Frisk.
