Tega Cay Leaders Continue To Weigh Options To Deal With Deer Overpopulation Issue

TEGA CAY, S.C. – Debate continues in Tega Cay over what to do about the city’s growing deer population.

Local leaders have paused a plan to hire trained sharpshooters to thin the herd, while they consider a recently approved birth control option.

A land management company hired by the city estimated there are just over 1,000 dear living in the city, as of September.

That’s up from 850 at the same time last year.

The city recently paused a plan, approved in September, to allow trained sharpshooters to kill up to 80 deer.

Since then, the state has approved the possible use of PZP, a type of birth control for deer. They are shot with darts with the pregnancy blocker.

Members of the Tega Cay Wildlife Conservation Society are trying to convince city leaders to go with that option.
