Highs Rise, Stormy Sunday Ahead

A Level 1 out of 5 severe risk has been posted for areas east of the Queen City on Sunday.

Happy Friday! A welcome warm-up arrives as we close out the workweek after the coldest stretch we’ve seen so far this December. Despite increasing cloud coverage this afternoon, stiff southwesterly breezes will allow highs to rise well above average in the 50s and 60s. We’ll warm up another five degrees across the board into the first half of the weekend before rain chances spike overnight into Sunday.

A powerful cold front sweeps into the Carolinas by the end of the weekend, bringing showers and storms along with it. While the overall severe threat is low, we’ll need to watch for a few severe storms Sunday afternoon, particularly east of the Metro. The strongest cells could bring heavy rain, lightning, damaging winds, and even a quick spin-up tornado. However, most of us, especially east of I-77, will only see widespread gusty showers throughout the day. A Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather has been posted for areas east of the Queen City on Sunday. Cold and very dry air packs in behind the front on Monday, leaving us with sunshine in the Piedmont and snow showers in the mountains.
