Winter Roars Back By Year’s End

Lows will bottom out in the 20s and 30s for the remainder of the year.

Despite clouds and lingering drizzle, the Queen City managed to crack 60° on Wednesday. Temperatures should top out near that mark again this Thursday afternoon, but don’t expect the seasonably mild temperatures to last. An incoming cold front will shut the door on any prolonged warmth as lows dip into the 20s and 30s to start the day on Friday. An upper-level low swings in behind the front, which will bring snow showers to the High Country and cold, dry air everywhere else. A stray flurry in the Foothills and northern Piedmont can’t be ruled out, but most remain precipitation-free for the remainder of the year.

Highs will struggle to clear the 30s and 40s this weekend despite abundant sunshine. A few clouds build into the Carolinas on New Year’s Eve, but rain chances remain near 0%. Our next chance for rain comes on the first Tuesday of 2024 as a trough attempts to sweep some Gulf moisture our way, but significant rainfall is unlikely. The first week of the new year looks mainly dry and sunny with near-normal temperatures in the 40s and 50s.
