Panthers Sign Safety Coleman To Three-Year Extension

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers and safety Kurt Coleman have agreed on a three-year contract extension according to team officials.

The deal is reportedly worth $17 million with $7 million guaranteed.

Coleman led the Panthers with seven interceptions in 2015, his first season with the team.  The seven interceptions were tied for third in the NFL.

The Panthers defense led the NFL with 24 interceptions and was ranked sixth in total defense. While Coleman may not be as well known as some of his defensive teammates, he was certainly a key cog in the Panthers’ productivity.  Coleman’s ability to cover opposing players in space, defend large areas of the field, and make plays on the ball added a dimension to the defense that had previously been missing.  He also was a sure tackler, finishing third on the team with 103 tackles.

The new contract extends Coleman until the 2019 season.

“It’s a blessing,” Coleman said. “When you go through situations you want what’s best for your family and what’s best for the team, and I’m really excited. I’m fortunate to be a part of this team for three more years. Training camp is the beginning of a new season, and for me, now that this is out of the way I am completely focused.”

The Carolina Panthers begin training camp on July 28, at Wofford College, in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
