A person familiar with the contract tells The Associated Press that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith has agreed to a four-year, $68 million extension that includes $45 million in guaranteed money. The deal was first reported in the Kansas City Star. Smith and his representatives had been discussing an extension with the Chiefs for several months, and the veteran quarterback was hopeful a deal would be done before the regular season.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) β€” Police in Northern California say San Francisco 49er Ray McDonald has been arrested on domestic violence charges. A police spokeswoman said the 29-year-old defensive end was taken into custody early yesterday morning after officers responded to a home in an upscale neighborhood. The arrest comes days after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced tougher penalties last week for players accused of domestic violence.

CHICAGO (AP) β€” The Oakland Athletics have acquired slugger Adam Dunn from the Chicago White Sox for minor league pitcher Nolan Sanburn. Second in the AL West, the Athletics were looking to add a hitter after trading Yoenis Cespedes (yoh-EHN’-ehs SEHS’-peh-dehs) to the Boston Red Sox for starter Jon Lester before the July 31 non-waiver deadline. Dunn has 460 career homers but struggled in four seasons with the White Sox.

NEW YORK (AP) β€” Men’s fourth seed David Ferrer and women’s No. 5 Maria Sharapova were ousted from the U.S. Open yesterday. Ferrer was a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 loser to Gilles Simon (ZHIHL’ see-MOHN’) in a third-round match, and Sharapova fell to 10th-seed Caroline Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK’-ee) 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Five-time champion and No. 2 men’s seed Roger Federer advanced to the fourth round.

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) β€” Tony Stewart was unable to finish last night’s Sprint Cup event at Atlanta Motor Speedway, his first race since his sprint car struck and killed a fellow driver three weeks ago. He started 12th and got as high as fourth before slamming the wall on laps 122 and 172, shredding the right side of his car. Kasey Kahne (kayn) and Matt Kenseth finished one-two in Atlanta to qualify for the Chase for the Championship.
