Protests Over CMS Anti-Bullying Policy

CHARLOTTE, NC– A large protest outside of the Government Center in Uptown ahead of Tuesday’s Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board Meeting, with the district’s anti-bullying policy at the center of the controversy.

Misinformation, allegations and heated rhetoric, all swirling around a CMS policy dealing with transgender students.

Some parents are questioning the district’s recent, controversial training for principals on protecting transgender students. People on both sides of the issue spoke out during public comments at tonight’s meeting.

Board chair Mary McCray says CMS is just following the laws of the land.

The Supreme Court stayed a Fourth Circuit ruling requiring schools to allow transgender students to use the bathroom that fits their gender identity while it considers and appeal.
