Local Rescue Takes in Forgotten Animals Ahead of Hurricane

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. – As Hurricane Matthew nears the Carolina coast, one local wildlife center is working to rescue some feathered or four-legged friends they say are often forgotten about.

Carolina Waterfowl Rescue took in dozens of animals Wednesday that were transported to the Charlotte-area from Wilmington. The center’s director, Jennifer Gordon, says the center is the only place willing to take in unusual pets like pelicans, pigs and swans. Gordon says, “People have a ton of resources, and they can sort of help themselves, in a way. But animals can’t. They are sort of at the mercy of whoever is there.”

The rescue center has already taken in more than 40 animals and is expected to have 100 more by the end of Thursday.
