It’s Official, Marcus Jones Is Charlotte’s New City Manager
Update: Charlotte City Council, in an open session meeting held Wednesday evening, voted to select Marcus Jones as the next city manager for the City of Charlotte.
“I am honored to work with residents, staff and council as the new city manager of Charlotte,” said Jones. “Charlotte is a growing, diverse and innovative city with a thriving future. I look forward to working in partnership with residents, the business community and city staff. We will develop and create priorities that align with the city’s vision for the future.”
Jones is currently the city manager for Norfolk, VA where he has served since 2011. Before becoming city manager Jones served as the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Finance and Administration for the city of Richmond, Va., and Assistant City Manager for Norfolk.
Both the mayor of Charlotte and interim city manager offered their takes on Jones’s selection.
“The city should be very pleased with the mayor and city council’s decision to hire Marcus,” Interim City Manager Ron Kimble said. “His experience in solid fiscal management, economic development and commitment to community engagement makes me confident the city will be in excellent hands with him. I feel proud to leave him with the most competent and dedicated city employees in local government,” Kimble said.
“The council and I look forward to working with Marcus in making Charlotte a 21st century city where opportunity is open to all,” Mayor Jennifer Roberts said. “We have a lot of great work to do as a growing, innovative city, and it is clear from Marcus’ track record and references that he is ready to roll up his sleeves and hit the ground running.”
Jones is scheduled to start his new position December 1st.
CHARLOTTE, NC — Sources say Norfolk, VA City Manager Marcus Jones is coming to Charlotte.
Charlotte City Council held an open meeting Tuesday night to discuss a new city manager. Following that meeting, media outlets in Norfolk began reporting that Jones was leaving his position there to fill the position in Charlotte.
The Mayor of Norfolk even reached out to local media outlets confirming the move and offering thanks and congratulations to Jones for his services.
Charlotte City Council is expected to confirm Jones’ position Wednesday.
