MONROE, N.C. – A 40-year-old Monroe man has been arrested on outstanding warrants after leading police on a pursuit and locking himself in his car.
Police said officers spotted David Wesley Brooks, who had outstanding warrants for a domestic violence protection order violation, around 3 p.m. on Wednesday near Sunset Drive in Monroe.
Officers attempted to make a traffic stop on Brooks’ vehicle but he refused to stop.
After an officer contacted and negotiated with Brooks on the phone, he pulled over on Highway 74 East at Secrest Road. At this point, he locked all the doors in his vehicle and refused to get out.
Officials said he told officers that he was armed with a gun in the vehicle but didn’t want to hurt anyone.
Deputies negotiated with Brooks to de-escalate the situation and were able to detain him without incident at around 5:20 p.m.
Monroe Police shut down Highway 74 between Kintyre Drive and Seacrest Avenue for this active investigation. The road reopened around 6:30 p.m.
Brooks has been charged with the following:
- Carrying a concealed weapon
- Possession of a stolen firearm
- Obtaining property by false pretenses
- Domestic violence and assault charges
- Misdemeanor fleeing to elude
- Felony possession of a gun on educational property, 2 counts
- Possession of a firearm in violation of a domestic violence order
More charges against Brooks could be issued, officials said.
