CHARLOTTE, NC / CNN — The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the Ebola outbreak is out of control.
Dr. Tom Frieden says travel restrictions may be making things worse. “The measures that have been taken that have made it harder to fly in and fly out have made it harder to get help in and harder to control the epidemic, and therefore, paradoxically, have increased risks to other places,” he said.
More than 3,000 people have been infected with the ebola virus so far this year in west Africa. More than 1,500 have died. The virus is spread through contact with an infected person’s bodily fluids.
There is some hope, however. The first human trial of an experimental Ebola vaccine is underway at the National Institutes of Health in Maryland. Researchers are hoping the drug will create a strong immune response to the virus.
