MEMPHIS, TN – A police officer and an 18-year-old were killed following a shootout in Memphis early Friday morning, according to Memphis Police.
According to a news conference, officers responded to a call at Horn Lake Road and Charter Avenue around 2 a.m. Officers say as they approached the vehicle, shots were fired towards them sparking an exchange of gunfire between police and the occupants in the vehicle.
Initial reports stated that two officers and two victims were struck by gunfire. A third officer was reportedly grazed by a bullet, according to Memphis Police.
Officers say the vehicle allegedly fled the scene and was located close by. One person was taken into custody immediately and the other person reportedly fled the scene but was caught a short time later, officers say.
Three officers and the two occupants of the vehicle were transported to a nearby hospital. During a news conference, interim Police Chief C.J. Davis said Officer Joseph McKinney was killed in the shooting. A second officer was being treated for a non-critical injury.
The name of the 18-year-old who also died has not been released at this time. A 17-year-old is currently in critical condition at the hospital.
