Isolated Severe Threat Friday, Much Cooler Weekend
Not everyone will see storms this afternoon, but those that do could get in on gusty winds and small hail.
Happy Friday! The summerlike pattern continues into our final day of the workweek after a few locations in the Piedmont and Foothills saw their first 90° day of the year; Charlotte fell just short at 89° on Thursday. Highs will return to the mid-80s this Friday afternoon as a rainmkaing system approaches from the west. A few pop-up storms will roll into our area later in the day. While not everyone will get in on the storms, those that do may see gusty winds approaching 50 mph and small hail. The tornado threat is nonzero, but very low.
Much cooler air pours into the Carolinas this weekend. Expect a mostly cloudy day with peeks of sunshine in the afternoon and evening on Sunday as highs top out in the 60s and 70s. A stray shower is possible through the first half of the weekend, but widespread rain will be more of an issue on Sunday as another area of low pressure rides along a stalled boundary to our south. Overcast skies and steady light rain throughout the day will make it difficult for afternoon highs to get out of the 40s and 50s as we close out the weekend. A wet wintry mix is even possible for elevations above 4500′, though significant accumulations are unlikely. Next week continues the cooler trend before temperatures rebound by Wednesday.
