Man Says Says FBI & DOT Are Investigating His Alleged Moving Company Scam Experience
STATESVILLE, N.C. – WCCB has emails into the FBI and the U.S. Department of Transportation about a local woman’s experience with a moving company. Ashley Ayers hired Ryder Relocations to move her belongings from Conway, South Carolina to Statesville, North Carolina. Her husband was in hospice, and they wanted to be closer to his medical team. She says the company sent a subcontractor, Sal’s Moving, to do the job. The movers first quoted her just under $6,000. Once her home was packed and on the moving truck, they told her the price changed to $18,000. She has refused to pay. The moving company has refused to tell her where her belongings are. Her husband has since died, and she cannot settle his estate because their wills and records were packed in the move.
After our first story aired, a man contacted WCCB with a similar story. He says this happens so often, there’s a Facebook group for victims. Cory Hodgson says, “I chose not to pay the criminals. I hired a lawyer. I wouldn’t give them money. I just was not going to pay it, like, I’m not going to be extorted.” He continues, “We have victims (in the Facebook group) that have offered to pay them that still never got their stuff. They (the moving company) just didn’t show up at delivery.”
Hodgson tells WCCB the FBI and the DOT are investigating his case and he’s hopeful they’ll have some news soon. Ayers has hired an attorney, and she has also contacted the FBI and the DOT.
