Iconic Gem Theatre Re-Opens in Kannapolis

It all couldn’t be done without help from people like Terry Rowland, born and raised in the old Cannon Mill Houses just blocks from downtown.

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. —Β The Gem of Cabarrus County is back in business.

Hundreds of residents have bought tickets and are lining up for the first showing at the Gem Theatre in downtown Kannapolis in nearly five months.

Originally opened in 1936, the Gem Theatre has been a staple in K-Town for almost 90 years – but shut down in January of this year for a 1.2-million-dollar renovation.

β€œGem Theatre is the showplace of Kannapolis,” says Gary Mills, director of Kannapolis Parks & Recreation. “It’s a piece of history.”

Mills also spearheaded the restoration project.

β€œNew high-tech sound system, did a new 4K laser projection system, new wide screen, new curtains, new flooring, new seats,” Mills’ eyes light up as he lists all the new additions.

β€œ[It] still feels like you’re stepping back in history, but you’ll have a movie experience like no other.”

And it all couldn’t be done without help from people like Terry Rowland, born and raised in the old Cannon Mill Houses just blocks from downtown. He used to work at the theater, getting paid 75Β’ an hour – about the price of a ticket back then.

β€œWe came here about a month ago and I looked at what was going on inside, and I couldn’t believe what they did in the past month. It’s just wonderful,” exclaims Rowland.

“I’m proud of it. I’m proud to be from Kannapolis.”

Pride isn’t an uncommon feeling for those attending tonight’s showing.

β€œIt’s just such a family-oriented theater,” says Pamela Herrick, a 17-year resident.

“You feel go about bringing the kids here. You feel good coming as a family. It’s just great.”

Nyatta and Layla Lott would come to theater almost every week before the renovations.

β€œParents have came, grandparents, and we get to share those memories with our kids,” says Nyatta.

And more memories are just waiting to be made – and seen.

β€œYou’ve got to come see the Gem,” Mills says.

“If you love movies, and you love history, and you love historical buildings, and you want an awesome movie experience, the Gem Theater is the place to go.
