McCrory Campaign Wants Recount of 90,000 Votes in Durham County

CHARLOTTE, NC – In the continuing race for North Carolina Governor, Pat McCrory’s camp says they’re willing to drop their request for a statewide recount in exchange for a closer look at early votes in one key county.

Pat McCrory’s campaign wants 90,000 early votes out of Durham County recounted because of concerns over faulty voting equipment.

Team McCrory says the votes, entered late on election night, vaulted Cooper into the lead.

“Durham County isn’t doing itself any favors. They’ve had election glitches,” explains WCCB Charlotte Political Contributor Mary C. Curtis.

Curtis says it’s still an uphill battle for McCrory because the local board already denied an earlier appeal.

“The Republican controlled election board in the county says they don’t see irregularities. And you can be sure that if it looked like they could have an advantage, that they would look into it,” Curtis says.

The McCrory camp says if a recount in Durham County showed no change in the vote totals, they are prepared to withdraw their request for a statewide recount.

“The fact that he is basically saying, trying to make a deal at this point, if you count this county, then I’ll drop the other appeals, it means that perhaps he’s starting to come to the realization that perhaps he was defeated,” Curtis says.

State Board members still haven’t agreed to the Durham recount yet – they say they need more legal documents from the local board before they can take up the appeal.

Unofficial results currently show McCrory trailing Roy Cooper by nearly 8,000 votes.

Also some counties are still counting provisional ballots.

Mecklenburg County still hasn’t certified their results.
