State Election Board to Consider Durham County Recount Wednesday
CHARLOTTE, NC – The final numbers in Mecklenburg County are in.
But statewide, the Race for Governor is now focused on 90,000 early votes out of Durham County.
Pat McCrory’s campaign wants those votes recounted because of concerns over faulty voting equipment.
Team McCrory says the votes, entered late on election night, vaulted Cooper into the lead.
“That’s an awful lot to go through,” says Mecklenburg County Director of Elections Michael Dickerson.
Dickerson says if could take up to a week to count the ballots by hand.
“Somebody will call a name and somebody else will tick, make a tick mark,” he explains.
But the McCrory camp says if a recount in Durham County showed no change in vote totals, they are prepared to withdraw their request for a statewide recount.
“That’s a pretty good signal that they’re ready to wrap it up,” says UNC Charlotte Political Science Professor Eric Heberlig.
Heberlig says McCrory likely sees Durham County as his last possible hope to make up the margin of votes separating him from Roy Cooper.
“You really need a way to get there to justify continuing not conceding,” he says.
