Keith Scott Investigation Results Expected Wednesday
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Keith Lamont Scott’s family will meet with Mecklenburg County prosecutors Wednesday morning at 9 AM, at a location Scott family attorney Charles Monnett declined to confirm for WCCB.
At that meeting, prosecutors are expected to announce whether or not charges will be filed against 26-year-old CMPD Officer Brently Vinson. Monnett says he hopes to hear specifically what led Vinson to fire his weapon while no other officers fired a shot, telling WCCB, “that is the key question.”
Monnett tells WCCB he wouldn’t be surprised if no charges are filed against Officer Vinson, “Given the political climate in Charlotte following the (Wes) Kerrick situation.”
Monnett says the Scott family feels strongly there was no legal justification for taking Scott’s life. Monnett feels strongly that filing a civil suit is possible. He says, “We appreciate the community support. We encourage people to express their thoughts and feelings in a lawful way. Violence is never justified. Ever.”
43-year-old Scott was shot in a University City apartment complex parking lot on September 20. Scott’s death, and a delay in the release of these police videos, prompted several days of unrest in Charlotte, including protests and deadly riots.
Critics called for the resignation of both police Chief Kerr Putney and Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts over their responses to the Scott shooting.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are preparing now in advance of Wednesday’s anticipated announcement. An internal CMPD communication obtained by WCCB shows officers have been ordered to 12 hour shifts from Wednesday morning until Monday morning.
WCCB asked a Charlotte city spokesperson for comment on Wednesday’s anticipated announcement. We were told the city had no comment right now, but “maybe after they make the announcement.”
