Heat Heightens Into Father’s Day Weekend
Toasty temperatures and minimal rain chances will make for some great pool days this weekend.
Get ready for the hottest stretch we’ve seen so far in 2024. A powerful upper-level ridge will slowly make its way over the East Coast over the next several days, keeping the Carolinas hot and largely dry as we head into the back half of June. We’ve been talking about it all week: Charlotte hasn’t hit 90° in 280 days, but that streak is in serious jeopardy over the next few afternoons. If the Queen City doesn’t manage to crack the big 9-0 this Thursday afternoon, then it’s almost a shoo-in to do so on Friday as highs soar into the mid-90s for many across the Piedmont and Foothills.
A weak cold front slides through our area overnight Friday into Saturday, but not much rain, if any, is in the forecast. A stray storm or two is possible over the next 48 hours, but most communities remain dry through Father’s Day weekend. Highs will cool slightly into the upper 80s on Dad’s Day Sunday as plemtiful sunshine only strengthens its grip on the Carolinas. The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor a budding area of low pressure to our south as it emerges east of Florida. This system has a 20% chance of becoming Alberto over the next 48 hours as it feasts upon warm Gulf Stream waters. While this storm won’t directly threaten the Carolinas, beachgoers this weekend will have to watch out for an increased rip current risk.
