CHARLOTTE, NC — Just in time for Earth Day, which is Tuesday, solar energy activists in Charlotte are spreading the word about affordable solar panels.  The Cleaner is Cheaper Coalition met in uptown Charlotte Monday.  The program helps homeowners order, pay for, and install home panels.  Federal and state tax credits can cover a large part of the cost.  Organizers say people often worry about the red tape.

“We like to think of ourselves as an energy hub,” said Sierra Club Charlotte Field Organizer Bill Gupton, “and so this is an opportunity for us, for citizens, to say, ‘I wanna be part of making Charlotte cleaner, greener, and more sustainable.'”

The average solar panel system costs about $7,000 without state tax incentives.
