CHARLOTTE, NC– Affordable housing is making its way to South Charlotte. Tuesday night, Charlotte City Council approved a rezoning requested by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership by a 9-2 vote.
It green-lights the development of 70 low-income apartments along Weddington Road, right across the street from Socrates Academy.
In 2011, the City adopted a policy with the goal of expanding affordable housing to areas of Charlotte that don’t currently have it.
For the city, the approval is a step forward. Though for some area residents, it’s a safety hazard.
South Charlotte resident BJ Anderson says if apartments are going to be developed there, so should sidewalks.
“Why they did this, knowing full well that there are no sidewalks for those people to get from where they are living to the shop across the street… it’s sad,” says Anderson.
A concern Republican Councilman Kenny Smith agrees with. He voted against the rezoning and says the building site falls short, while other council members say it works.
There were over two dozen people at Tuesday night’s council meeting who support the project. They say affordable housing is much needed in South Charlotte.
