Crew Standby for Icy Road Conditions in CLT
CHARLOTTE, NC — Road crews from York County to Charlotte to the mountains are in place to fight the first sign of ice early Saturday morning.
“I try not to drive when there’s ice,” said Kim Barnhill.
Drivers like her were preparing to stay off the roads all weekend, buying groceries, sidewalk salt and preparing for possible power outages.
In Charlotte, the city Department of Transportation will roll out 12 salt trucks around midnight.
CDOT it chose not to put salt down on dry streets this afternoon because it bounces off, and any rain will wash away brine solution.
In Mecklenburg County, the NC DOT has six salt trucks staged along Interstate-85, I-77, I-485 and I-277 in Uptown.
South Carolina DOT salted I-77 from Rock Hill to the state line and major highways Friday afternoon.
Crews are on standby from midnight to nine Saturday morning, preparing to sand any icy spots that won’t melt.
