Brewers look to end skid
UNDATED (AP) β Milwaukee’s Brewers have lost nine straight games and in the process have dropped out of first place in the National League Central. Loss No. 9 came last night at home to the St. Louis Cardinals, who have won six straight and now reside in first in the division.
The closest race in baseball is the American Central where the Royals lead the Tigers by a game. Tonight KC is in New York to face the Yankees while the Tigers open a series at home with San Francisco, the second-place club in the National West. The Giants trail the Dodgers by just two games and L.A. is hosting Arizona this evening.
The rest of this evening’s schedule has Washington playing host to Philadelphia, the White Sox in Cleveland, the Reds at home to the Mets, Baltimore at Tampa Bay, the Red Sox entertaining the Blue Jays, Seattle at Texas, the Twins at home to the Angels, San Diego at Colorado and Houston at Oakland.
This afternoon in Chicago, the Cubs are home to the Pirates, who are 5 Β½ games back of St. Louis in the NL Central.
US OPEN
Ladies semi’s today
NEW YORK (AP) β It’s another light day of play at the U.S. Open as the final weekend of the two-week event is coming up. On tap today are the women’s semifinals with Peng Shuai (schway) facing tenth-seed Carolina Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK’-ee) in one match and top-seed Serena Williams going against No. 17 Ekaterina Makarova in the other.
PGA-BMW CHAMPIONSHIP
First round still unfinished
CHERRY HILLS, Colo. (AP) β Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth (SPEETH) and Gary Woodland shared the lead when the opening round of the BMW Championship was stopped due to lightning. All are at 3-under 67. Several players are in the clubhouse at minus-2 with Henrik Stenson 2-under after 17 holes.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
Opening round for seniors
QUEBEC CITY (AP) β Two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen is making his Champions Tour debut today in Quebec City. He turned 50 last week, making him eligible for the senior tour. This year’s top player, Bernhard Langer (LAHN’-gur), is skipping the event. The German has won five tournaments this year and leads the money list.
NASCAR
Qualifying in Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) β Qualifying for the final race of NASCAR’s regular season takes place today at Richmond International Speedway. Tomorrow night’s race is the last chance for drivers who have not qualified for the Chase to do so. There are 19 drivers fighting for two spots in the 16-car Chase field.
The winner of this race a year ago was Carl Edwards while Kasey Kahne (kayn) won last week’s race in Atlanta to wrap up a Chase position.
