Police Arrest Man For Uptown Murder Of Paper Carrier

UPDATE: Police have arrested a man for the murder of a long-time newspaper delivery man in uptown Charlotte.

Detectives say Roger Best, 22, shot and killed Walter “Wes” Scott Jr., as he delivered papers early Wednesday morning near Romare  Bearden Park.

Apparently, Best shot Scott after attempting to rob him.

According to reports, as police responded to the shooting call, another individual flagged down police stating he had been shot also.

Police say that man was Best, who is currently being treated for his injuries at Carolina’s Medical Center.  Police have not indicated how Best was shot.

Upon release from the hospital, Best will be charged with Murder, Attempted Armed Robbery, and Possession of Firearm by Felon.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have identified the 65-year-old man who was killed early Wednesday morning in Uptown.  Investigators say Walter “Wes” Scott, Jr. was shot and killed near Romare Bearden Park off West Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

A second man flagged down an officer a short distance away saying he had also been shot.  Police are not saying if the shootings were related.  That man was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

No arrests have been made at this time.  A family member confirms to WCCB that Scott was delivering newspapers for the Charlotte Observer in Uptown at the time of the shooting.  Scott delivered papers for The Observer for over 40 years, according to family members.

Scott was a contractor for Scott Upright.  Upright said Scott left the warehouse around 2am Wednesday morning to begin his delivery route.  Upright also said Scott had mentioned retiring from his position but said that he wouldn’t retire because he had been doing this for his entire life.
