Man on the Edge: Vaping Tax?

This video is no longer available.

Vaping, e-hookas, electronic cigarettes.  Whatever you call them, these things are getting very popular.  There are vape bars opening up everywhere, and at the risk of sounding like your grampa, all the kids are doing it these days.  And until now, doing it without any government oversight.  Until now.

The vaping trend finally caught the eye of somebody in the government, because Wednesday, the feds proposed new rules that would regulate e-cigs.  Things like preventing sales to kids under 18, ending free samples, and requiring warnings about nicotine in the e-juice.

And in case you didn’t know, that’s how these things work.  You put flavored oil into a pipe that has a heating element, puff, and the vapor feels like you’re smoking.  Most of the time, the oil has nicotine in it, and that’s a concern for the feds.  They say kids are being confused by the fruity-flavor labels and drinking them, and nicotine can be poisonous in large amounts.  They’re also concerned about the oils being used, although they’re the same oils used in Halloween fog machines, which have been tested and found to be not harmful.

But we also mentioned that people are smoking these things more and more.  And if they’re vaping e-cigs, that means they’re not buying real cigarettes, which are taxed like crazy.  And that makes our Man on the Edge, Robert Wilder, wonder if the government is being on the level about the whole thing…
