A Lincoln County School Is Taking Extra Precautions Over Growing Cold and Flu Concerns

IRON STATION, NC — School officials are asking for help from parents as the number of flu and cold related absences climb.

On Tuesday alone, the principal of Iron Station Elementary said that more than 90 students were either absent or went home early. Officials also say they have had multiple confirmed cases of the flu and other illnesses.

The school is asking parents to keep their children at home if a fever is present, and to adhere to the school’s policy of the child being fever-free, without medication, for 24 hours before allowing them to return. Officials say that extra care and precautions are also being taken in regards to disinfecting classrooms and common areas on a routine basis.

“Hello, this is Mrs. Benton, calling from Iron Station Elementary School, asking for parents help in combating the cold and flu season at our school.  Today alone, including students that went home early, we had over 90 absences.  This is the most that I can remember us having.  We have had a number of confirmed cases of the flu and other illnesses and we ask that you please adhere to our policy of students being fever free, without medication, for 24 hours before returning to school.  We are continuously disinfecting our classrooms and common areas but need your help to avoid the continuation of spreading these germs by keeping students home if they have a fever.  With your assistance we can get all of our students healthy and back to school in a timely manner.  Thanks and have a great evening.”
