UPDATE: Monday, a fresh coat of paint covered a racial slur at a school in Rock Hill. A custodian found the slur Sunday morning on the rock outside South Pointe High School. It referenced Black History Month and the KKK.
Students repainted the rock with a positive message, saying: “We are all equal.”
“I think it’s horrible,” said Rock Hill resident Trish Sacco. “And what the rock says now is what the school stands for. Everybody here is equal. It’s just stupidity on someone’s part.”
ROCK HILL, S.C. — School officials say someone painted a racial slur on a rock outside a Rock Hill high school.
The rock at South Pointe High School was painted sometime between Saturday evening and Sunday morning. The racial slur was related to February being Black History Month.
A school custodian painted over the rock Sunday morning but several people were able to get photos of the rock before it was repainted. The school said there are surveillance cameras in the area.
Here is a statement from the Rock Hill School District:
“Rock Hill School District is one that celebrates diversity, and last week in our community, we celebrated a group called the Friendship 9 whose criminal records were vacated for trespassing 54 years ago at a local food counter that was designated for “whites only.” While the district is disappointed in the actions of those who painted the rock, we will not let them take from us our joy and success in the progress our community has made, and will continue to make, in racial relations.”
