DETROIT (AP) β The two teams battling it out for first place in the American League Central continue their three-game series tonight in Detroit. The Tigers start the night just a game back of the Royals after beating KC last night 9-5. The Tigers are sending their ace to the mound, 15-game winner Max Scherzer, against 11-game winner Jason Vargas.
UNDATED (AP) β The wild-card races are taking shape as we enter the final few weeks of the season. If the playoffs began today the two teams advancing to the postseason as wild cards in the American League would be the Athletics and Mariners. From the National League the two teams would be the Pirates and Giants.
ATLANTA (AP) β General manager Danny Ferry of the Atlanta Hawks has been disciplined by CEO Steve Koonin for making racially charged comments. The comments occurred during a team meeting when Ferry was reading scouting reports about free agent Luol Deng (LOO’-ul dehng). Ferry apologized for “repeating comments that were gathered from numerous sources” about Deng.
UNDATED (AP) β In case you missed the results of the two NFL Monday Night games, here’s how things went. In Detroit the Lions opened with a Monday Night home game for the first time since 1971. They responded with a 35-14 win over the New York Giants. In the second contest Arizona clawed back to beat the visiting Chargers 18-17 as Carson Palmer threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to John Brown with 2:25 to play for the winning TD.
NEW YORK (AP) β The U.S. Open came to a close yesterday with Marin Cilic (CHIHL’-ihch) defeating Kei (KAY) Nishikori 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. The victor for Cilic is his first in a Grand Slam event. The 14th-seeded Cilic prevented the 10th-seeded Nishikori from becoming the first man from Asia to win a major singles championship.
