MONROE, NC – Monroe Police are warning people not to leave their vehicles warming up unattended despite winter temperatures after a weekend arrest.

A woman who works at a restaurant on West Roosevelt Boulevard started her vehicle in the parking Sunday morning and left it to warm up.

When she went back outside, someone had stolen her vehicle so she called police.

A short time later, officers say they found 20-year-old Justin Simpson inside the stolen vehicle at a nearby motel.

Simpson is charged with motor vehicle theft and has a $50,000 secure bond.

Police say this is a good reminder that warming up your car gives thieves a tempting target.

Here are a few ways to protect your vehicle during winter:

Start your car with a remote starter that requires the car to be locked.

Stay aware of your surroundings, and keep an eye out for anyone suspicious.

Do not leave your vehicle running at a convenience store, it is a quick and easy target.
