BEAVER CREEK, Colo. (AP) — Hannes Reichelt of Austria was in first place in the world championships super-G after the top 30 racers Thursday and appeared headed for gold on a day when Bode Miller suffered a deep cut on his leg in a crash.
All that’s preventing Reichelt from his first win at the worlds was a stunning finish by one of the remaining 30 lower-ranked skiers.
Reichelt finished the challenging course in 1 minute, 15.68 seconds, 0.11 seconds faster than Canada’s Dustin Cook, who made a surprise run from back in the field. Adrien Theaux of France was in line for third.
Racing ninth, Miller hooked his left arm on a gate, spun backward, lost both skis and tumbled down the hill. He retrieved his gear and finished the race. The U.S. Ski Team said his cut was being evaluated by medical staff.
It was Miller’s first race since back surgery in November.
