Pastor asked to leave church after post-election sermon
CHARLOTTE, NC — A Charlotte pastor now has to find a new congregation after being forced out. He believes a sermon he delivered days after the November election was the final straw.
“I’d say I’d preach the same sermon over again three more times if I could,” said Rev. Dr. Ben Boswell.
That sermon was for the uber progressive, Myers Park Baptist Church congregation. It was back in November, the Sunday after the presidential election.
“My message in that sermon was that it’s not over just because Trump got elected. The fight continues,” explained Boswell.
Boswell said he was given a standing ovation from his congregation, but it appears some didn’t like the message. A few weeks later, Boswell says he was asked to resign. He’s been a shepherd without a flock ever since.
“It was really came down to a difference of opinion about the direction of the church,” Boswell said of his resignation.
The Myers Park Baptist Church Council gave this statement to WCCB:
“Ben Boswell left our church in November of 2024. This was not a result of any one incident, but rather a desire and need for the church to return to a more holistic approach, incorporating all of our four pillars: Inclusivity, Community, Spirituality and Justice.
We will not discuss his departure, as that is our church policy, but we state unequivocally that it was not a result of his very well-received sermon after the election.”
Boswell believes his former church is a an example of the direction of liberal politics.
“What’s happened at Myers Park is not unlike what’s going on in the Democratic Party. There’s a there’s a discussion, a contention about what’s the future of the party, where are we headed as progressive people?” asked Boswell.
